Happy Birthday Mom!

Yesterday was my mom’s birthday. As she is awesome and I am trying to save money, I decided to make her present this year.

I found a great craft tutorial on pinterest that involves one of my favorite crafts- shrinky dinks!

So I requested photos from my sisters and set to work!

Using Type 6 recyclable plastic and a sharpie I traced our silhouettes.

I just held the plastic to my laptop screen to trace. I also added a little frame and our initials.

Then I baked them on a tray of foil for a few minutes and they magically shrank!*

Then I attached them to a bracelet (I punched holes in the plastic before baking)

I put the corresponding letter next to the corresponding daughter.

They make a lovely clacking noise, just like we do in real life when we fight 🙂

In ascending age from left to right- Robin, Katie, Me.

I’m pretty proud of it, and mom seemed to like it! Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of her showing it off…

I leave you instead with this picture of Bartlet ‘keeping calm’

*Not really magic, science. This is the tutorial I always use when making shrinky dinks. It’s great: http://www.curbly.com/users/Chrisjob/posts/2252-DIY-Shrinky-Dinks-#jump

B3DA Day 4: To Do List

One of my favorite food bloggers Joy the Baker recently decided to compile a “30 Things Before 30 Years” list of things to do before she turns 30 in a few months. Here’s her list so far. I like her ambition! I think someone else on the B3DA Blogroll is also doing something similar? Sorry I don’t remember which blog!

Anywho, as the greatest piece of advice that was ever given to me*  was by my grandfather’s cousin Claire “If you’re bored, you must be a boring person” I think I’d like to challenge myself to take on new things to keep myself from being bored as I get older. So I want to make my own list of 27 things to accomplish before I turn 27 (I’ve got some time–till Nov. 21)

And I’m going to need your help. These can be things that are fun, maybe a little bit out of my comfort zone, preferably cheap/within my budget/free, and/or adventurous. I’m going to add a few bummer, adult things that just *need* to get done.

  1. Eat at Hubcap Grill‘s restaurant or food truck (I’ve followed them on twitter forever, but I’ve never eaten there!)
  2. Make doctor’s/dentist/eye doctor’s appointments and keep them!
  3. Run a 5k.
  4. Run a half marathon.
  5. Mod Podge book  pages onto my dresser drawers.
  6. Help create 2 Halloween costumes from scratch.
  7. Keep plants alive on our patio and grow some more.
  8. Finish Jane Austen cross stitch
  9. Learn to embroider
  10. Throw a kick ass Halloween party
  11. Learn to cook….what?
  12. Read Little Women
  13. Visit 3 new Houston museums
  14. Get my second holes re-pierced (with Lisa next Friday!)

What else? I need your thoughts!

By the way, how excited are we for April 23rd????

So excited!

*Probably not, but it was the first piece that came to mind. The best advice was probably Nancy Pearl’s Rule of 50. “I live by what I call ‘the rule of fifty,’ which acknowledges that time is short and the world of books is immense. If you’re fifty years old or younger, give every book about fifty pages before you decide to commit yourself to reading it, or give it up.”

~~~~~~Jane Austen Challenge Day 4~~~~~~~~
Favorite Jane Austen quote:
I don’t think it’s in the book, but in the 1996 Emma,
“Jane! You’re a fragile, fragile creature!”
My mom and I love to quote this. All. the. time.
